Be Mindful Connection Gratitude

What should I take?

“I’m tired and run down and just don’t feel like myself,” she said.

“Oh,” I replied.

“I think I should take a multivitamin, that would help. I’m sure my diet isn’t varied enough and I’m missing some things. Like a B vitamin or magnesium or zinc…”

“Huh…” I responded.

“What, you don’t think a multivitamin is a good idea?” she retorted. “I know I need to eat better!”

“Well….” I faltered, and then I thought about it for a bit. “No.”

We are living in the midst of a global pandemic. The kids are not physically going back to school. Anyone who can work from home is working from home. Anyone who cannot work from home is going out into the world, wearing a mask, washing their hands neurotically, then wondering if today is the day they are going to get sick. Some people are dying of COVID. Some people are dying of other things. Some areas have wild fires. Some have hurricanes. Some have flooding. Some have drought. It is a presidential election year in the US and things are heating up. Some people are being shot. Some people are fighting for the right to exist. Some people are still fighting for the right to be seen and heard. Some people are hiding on their floors under pink blankets waiting for it all to pass.

“No. I don’t think you need to take a multivitamin. If you are feeling fatigued and a bit run down and weary. No.”

If I were my own best friend I would tell myself I need to take…

  • a walk, a hike, an adventure outside (go find nature)
  • a break, a nap, a pause (reset button)
  • a look up, a look down, a look out (a change of perspective)
  • a deep, deep breath (and then a few more)
  • a kickboxing class (online of course!) and pummel the heck out of something (any good vigorous exercise will do)
  • a moment to call the people you love and tell them you love them (not on zoom, just a normal phone call or even better write an actual letter and mail it)
  • the time to sleep enough (most of us are not sleeping long enough or very well)
  • the time to journal or write or put thoughts on paper (clear some space in your mind)
  • a paintbrush and smear some paint on paper or canvas or sculpt something or create something (be artsy)
  • some dirt and a plant and grow something (basil is pretty easy if you have sun and then you can eat it with tomatoes and mozzarella… yum, or make pesto)
  • a moment to say thank you (for anything and everything, for life, for electricity, for clean water, for gyoza, for warm baths, for sunsets, for fuzzy slippers)
Take 2 and call me in the morning…

But, don’t take another pill just because you feel “off”. Instead take the time to do something for your mind or your body or your soul. Take the time to reconnect with yourself. Be your own best friend.
