If I were my own best friend I would try to live my life with a quote from William Morris in mind…
“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.”
— William Morris
***I like this quote. It makes me think. What do I want my home to be filled with? I always come back to the same answer – the people I love and care about. I think they are the most beautiful (and useful) parts of my life.
Obviously this answer will be different for each person. For some people it will be their pet (I really wish I could have a dog, a big, happy, slobbery, loves-me-like-no-other, dog, but our apartment doesn’t allow it…). For others it will be their friends or spouse or significant other. For some it will be their kids. For some it will be their books or their collection of artwork or memorabilia. For some it is flowers and colors and fabrics and rugs. That’s the beauty of it all! Your home should be a place that highlights what is most beautiful and useful to you.
As you look at your home and think about what it is filled with, do you see the things that mean the most to you?
i love this quote! i already live simply, but will be using this very concept to pare down yet more to simplicity in usefulness and beauty, thanks for the confirmation and encouragement to live in this very intentional way!
